B-17 Serial Number 43-38205 "Bouncing Baby" from the 452nd Bomb Group

8th Air Force (World War II), 3rd Air Division, 45th Combat Bombardment Wing
452nd Bombardment Group (Heavy), 730th Bombardment Squadron

(I find it interesting that the vertical stabilizer de-icer boot was painted over with unit markings.)
(The boot must not have been inflated on this ship because I cannot imagine the paint would look that good afterwards!)

I called Millard Ward, one of the crew members, he told me that
they flew for quite a while after being hit by the German Jet fighters,
He was the First to notice flames coming from the right wing. They
found the emergency field at Y-44 near Beek, The Netherlands that was
being constructed using steel landing matts. He said the pilot sat the
plane down without any trouble but it soon started to blaze. He felt if
fire fighting equipment would have been handy they could have saved
the plane. He said they visited Brussels that night.
Crash occured March 19, 1945 according to aviation-safety.net
that makes it mission 225, Zwickau

John A. Davies 391st Photo Album has a different view of this wreckage.

Jim Harris moved to Y-44 from A-71 May 1, 1945. He most likely snapped the above picture that day.
He flew from Y-44 7 times mostly doing instrument training and some formation work.
He flew from Y-44 to B-87 moving tents etc on May 28, 1945.
